5 Easy Ideas For Decorating Your Dining Room

September 4th, 2010
Comments Off

If your dining room gives off a dull and boring feel, it might be time to change the room’s style. You can do plenty of things to bring more life to the dining room, tie the room together and make it more stylish. These are great tips that will help you style any dining room.

1.The dining room should have an area rug that pulls all the colors together. Your table and chairs should be able to fit on the area rug. There should be space between the rug and walls, so your area rug shouldn’t be too big.

As a rule, you should probably measure the perimeter of the table and then add about four feet in each direction for your rug. If you are going for a totally new look go for something different with your rug and redecorate the room based on the new rug.

2. Include a centerpiece on your dining room table. Using a flower arrangement will add some color to the room. You can add light to the room with candles, while using a glass bowl or vase filled with fruit will add an earthy atmosphere to the room. When it comes to your centerpieces get creative. Depending on the season, or just your mood, you should change the centerpiece.

3. A new piece of artwork or set of shelves can add style to the room. Look around the walls to check if you have nothing on the walls. You can go with one large piece of artwork or multiple smaller pieces of artwork that you can hang on the walls that are tied together. You can also choose to decorate your walls with pictures, candles and other items if you hang on or two shelves on the wall.

4. Add style to the room with the dining room table. China sets, along with a placemat or stylish tablecloth set out on the table, will add a finished look to the room. It helps to make the room feel inviting instead of cold and uninviting to guests.

Changing things up a bit is as easy as changing the place settings on the table, that way you can keep your main setting without having to grow tired of your table’s look.

5. Go with a new light fixture to further add new style to the room. Add new lighting to the room with chandeliers above the table or tall standing lights in the corners of the room. The style of the room and the chandelier should fit together. You can give the room the right amount of light by simply adjusting the height of the chandelier.

There are other ways to add style to your dining room, these are just some of the many choices. When it comes to your dining room be creative, think about what you want and make just make it happen.

Decorate Your Small Room With These Five Simple Tips

August 21st, 2010
Comments Off

A room shouldn’t be lacking in style just because it’s small. There are plenty of ways that you can make your room look more stylish and make it functional through decorating. Here are a few tips on how to decorate the small rooms of your home that will allow you to best utilize space while keeping it stylish.

Paint an Accent Wall
Consider painting a single wall in the room in a bold color so that it may act as an accent wall. Doing this will make the room appear larger while giving it a stylish feel at the same time. Ensure that the color of the other walls is complementary to the color of the bold wall so that it doesn’t seem out of place.

Though, you should really stay away from dark colors. If the accent wall is going to be painted in a bold color you shouldn’t choose black, dark blue, red or dark green. You choice should fall along a color like pink, yellow or aquamarine instead. You only make the area look much smaller when you paint it in dark colors.

Choose Furniture that Fits the Size of Your Room
Furniture should be in scale. This means not putting a huge sleigh bed in a small bedroom. The same rules apply to the family room. You should use pieces that fit well in the room without taking too much space. Walking comfortably without having to bump into all your furniture is something that you will definitely want.

Find Furniture that Works as Storage, Too
You should also look for pieces that can pull double duty, especially when working with a small room. Something like a wooden chest can be used as a coffee table or side table, and works well as a storage space for things like blankets, toys and other items that need to be stored. This way you will be able to sneak in more storage space and you will have more room in a small area.

You should be sure to use as much vertical space as you possibly can. So much more storage are and design space can be added when you maximize the height of your walls. You can get a great vertical storage space out of pieces such as bookshelves and armoires.

You can also use shelving that is attached to the wall, it’s a great idea. Design and functional space would be the functions of the shelving. You can add some style to the room by simply placing some of your books and knickknacks in an interesting manner on the shelves.

Let in Some Light to Open Up a Room
Filter as much natural light into the room as possible. Natural light allows the room to look as if it’s bigger and brighter. A pair of plain drapes or blinds will work well for you, some window treatments can be overwhelming and should be avoided. The room will look larger if you reflect light in it by adding mirrors to the walls.

Choose Lighting that Doesn’t Overwhelm the Space
You should avoid any really large lighting fixtures or any fixtures that hang down. Without having to take up much space and keeping the room well lit, track lighting is a great idea to go with.

You shouldn’t have to work too hard and be bored when you are decorating a small space. You can really enjoy your small space if you make sure to keep things simple, functional and personal in style as much a possible; not only will it work right but it’ll look good too.

Don’t Make These 5 Mistakes On Your Next Decorating Project

July 23rd, 2010
Comments Off

Though decorating your home should be entirely based on your style, there are still things that you should avoid. Some people are great at decorating and other might need a bit of help with it. The style of décor you are aiming for doesn’t matter in this article, what does is that you can make some mistakes; so these are the five most common and the ways to avoid them.

1. Interior Decorating without a Plan or Vision

Beginning to decorate a room without an aim or goal is one of the worst things you can do. The end result will be a room that looks rushed, random and overall sloppy because of the lack of flow.

Before you even think about buying any décor for the room take a minute to plan out the style that you want for the room. You don’t need to come up with any grand ideas for the room, you just need a base to stick with.

2. Complementary and Contrasting Home Décor: Too Much Matching

Everything matching is something that quite a few people fall into. At times this can be something like the living room being full pure blues. A monochromatic look needs this, so if that’s what you are going for then it might be fine. Most people, however, will need to use complementary and contrasting colors in their room. Instead of drowning the room in one or two colors, take this approach to make items stand out in the room.

3. Disorganization: Decoratively Organize Your Room

Organization is a key factor when it comes to a room. The décor of the room won’t be able to stand out in a disorganized room, thus allowing it to go unnoticed.

A decorative piece of décor is not enough; it must also be a functional piece. Book cases don’t need to just hold books, the same applies for other furnishings. Shelve wicker baskets and hide miscellaneous items like remotes, toys and magazines in them.

Storage space in a room should be fully utilized. This can mean using the space under beds to store clothes, or using bathroom cabinets with small baskets to tuck away little items like toothbrushes, floss and other person items. Make sure to use your creative talents in organizing and storing small objects so that they don’t just lie around in the room.

4. Check Room dimensions before You Get the Wrong Furniture

It doesn’t matter if you are decorating a living room or a bedroom, be sure to take measurements of the room before you decorate. Your couch shouldn’t be something that’s so huge that it takes up the most space in the room. While, at the same time you don’t want to end up with a couch that looks ridiculously small in your room.

Your room’s size and shape should be the base of your plans for furniture. Once you figure out the space for the décor you can work in a style, so buy your furniture first.

5. Pictures are Too High on the Walls

Interior decorating is too often plagued with this very common mistake. Unless you have a huge portrait they should all be at eye level; if the picture is huge, raise it away from the floor and make sure the middle is at eye level. Place artwork so that you look at it straight on instead of looking up at it.

These interior decorating mistakes are just a few of the most common amongst the many mistakes that are made. You will soon be on your way to a beautifully decorated home if you avoid these very common mistakes.

Using Decorative Glass In Your Home

July 15th, 2010
Comments Off

Have you perused the terms commonly used for art glass? Most people find them numerous and perplexing, so much so that I threw in a ringer right in the title. For starters, mica isn’t glass at all, as most of us learned in elementary science class. Rather it’s a mineral that flakes nicely into translucent sheets. Thus it is an ideal material for lamp shades, as demonstrated in the famous “coolie” shades made by Dirk van Erp.

Although you can safely use the general term “art glass” to refer to most kinds of decorative glass, including that in period lighting, windows, doors, or hand-blown vases, it’s best to learn more accurate and specific terms. The first thing to discern is the distinction between stained and leaded glass. In historical European cathedral windows and the like, this stained glass is colored glass that’s been painted with vitreous oxides and fired with or without silver nitrate. These examples of older stained glass are considered to be leaded. For those who have seen these glorious works of art in person, you would easily recognize the lead cames that hold the pieces of the composition in place: that rib-like dark matter seen between the bits of light-filled glass.

Fortunately, nowadays things are much simpler. Those who use the term “stained glass” today are simply referring to any window with colored glass. If you have a clear glass window that’s leaded, you would simple call it “leaded.”

Artisans use minerals to give colored glass its tint. But remember, not all stained glass is transparent. The term “opalescent” is used for translucent stained glasses. But be careful. Opalescent glass is not transparent but rather milky. Also, this type of glass can have more than one color in a sheet. Tiffany windows are a noteworthy example of opalescent glass.

{Another notable example of this is the windows by Greene & Greene, who layered their glass the same way as Tiffany, but they used copper foil and lead overlay to enhance the dimensional quality of their compositions.} Today, the glass made by Greene & Greene is actually a very common glass. Since it’s iridized on one surface, it has the appearance of a rainbow. Frank Lloyd Wright and Tiffany have both used this same glass.

Favrile became the brand-name of Tiffany’s version of this shimmering opalescent glass, a term that was trademarked in 1894. This iridescent glass is truly remarkable, as it appears to change colors when viewed from various angles. Other companies also made iridized glass, but none used the term Favrile.

Now that we’ve clarified mica, stained glass, leaded glass, opalescent, iridescent, and Favrile, what exactly are slag and slumped? The sheets of opalescent glass used in Arts and Crafts light fixtures is known as slag glass. (The word “slag” actually comes from the undocumented belief that the glass got its color from slag from iron smelting works.) As for slumped glass, that’s glass that’s fired in the kiln so it will curve. Glass artisans will actually get into the kiln to manipulate the glass into shades, which are first “slumped” over a bowl. Artists can even create more complicated shapes, ranging from delicately folded glass in a tulip-like shade to futuristic shapes that resemble a translucent article marshmallow after a swipe through the campfire.

Adding a Little Style to Your Country Style Decor

June 4th, 2010
Comments Off

A country-style décor creates a look that’s both welcoming and warm. A country décor brings back all those fond memories of lon g ago: visits to grandma’s house, family gatherings, and delicious meals. It’s you and your family who are the ones to spend the most time in your home, so you want it to reflect your personalities and likes. Homes should give a warm and inviting impression but be appealing as well. The following tips will help you spruce up and add splashes of interest to your home.

The Key to Country Décor
All the little extras or accents help to create a country atmosphere in your home. Furniture is wooden or made of natural fabrics such as cotton textiles that add depth and color. Display dishes and other knick knacks should be made of iron, stone, pewter, copper, and other natural elements. If you have lots of collectibles to display in the kitchen area, arrange them on a wrought-iron baker’s rack for added appeal.

Giving Furniture That Comfortably Worn “Country” Look
For rustic appeal, you want the furnishings in a country décor to appear slightly worn. Solid oak furniture makes this a easy look to achieve. Apply a layer of paint, let it partially dry, and then rub the edges and other areas that would typically wear with a cloth or sponge. Another way to do it is to let the paint dry thoroughly and then use sandpaper to lightly sand to edges, creating that worn look. If you’re buying wooden furniture, choose pine or another light-colored wood to add to the country feel.

Accents Make All the Difference!
When it comes to accents for a country décor, your options are endless. For example, you might add an extra element of country to the room with a handmade quilt. Sling one casually across a corner of a rocking chair or throw one over the back of the sofa. Another easy way to add color and texture is with throw pillows. Perfect for this style are throw pillows with crocheted covers or country-oriented tapestry designs. Another great touch for this décor style is a braided rug. Start with a large oval braided rug in the center of the room and then arrange furnishings around it, creating a cozy central area in which to relax or entertain guests.

Baskets, copper pots, and vases are practically a necessity when it comes to designing a country décor. Nearly any room can benefit from the addition of a basket. Place a small basket on the fireplace mantle or on wood coffee tables or end tables in the living room. Load the basket with herbs, greenery and dried flowers. A medium-sized basket filled with painted wooden fruits makes a great addition to the kitchen. Baskets can also be used for holding magazines or towels in the bathroom.

Add an earthy touch to the décor with some copper and stone pots. Fill them with herbs or flowers straight from the garden. What’s great about these pots is that they can be placed anywhere and everywhere. Live plants and herbs work wonders, making a home feel warm and welcoming.

With these tips, you can add some creative flair to your country décor. But be sure to use your own ideas as well, as you want your home to express your unique personality. What will result is a home that’s not only warm and beautiful, but which showcases your individuality as well.
