Bedroom Color Choices

August 15th, 2010

Your bedroom is your escape from the world, and no matter whether you choose to spend your time there lounging and reading or watching television, it should exude your taste and style. Deciding how to choose the right color for a bedroom can be somewhat confusing, and looking at small paint or wallpaper samples in stores is not always the answer. Before choosing colors for your bedroom, take into consideration the following tips. Selecting the right colors for your room is necessary in order to design a sanctuary of relaxation.

Conveying a Mood

Before you choose a color for a bedroom, do not be tempted to go with something just because it is pleasing to the eye. You may end up regretting the color choice later on down the road. The vibe that you want to exude in in your bedroom should be considered before investing money and time. Due to the fact that color has the ability to alter the mood, selecting the correct color for the bedroom is vital to the design process.

Cool colors such as blue, lavender, and green set a relaxing tone, and they are an excellent choice for a bedroom. Choose a light shade for a calming effect~[Select lighter shade for a relaxing effect~For a calming effect, select a lighter shade~lighter hues may have a calming effect~To create an effect that is calming, choose colors that are light~You can achieve a relaxing aura if you choose light colors}.

Energizing and warm, red is an excellent selection of color for your bedroom. To create a haven for romance, choose rich red walls.

Do you want to wake up feeling rejuvenated and ready to begin the day? Choose a lemony shade of yellow. Selecting a lighter shade of yellow will have the effect of making the bedroom feel naturally bright and airy.

Changing the Look of Visual Space

Keep in mind that the colors that you select not only affect the vibe of the room, but also the manner in which the eye perceives space. Is the bedroom less spacious than desired? It is a good idea to choose wallpaper or paint in a light cool color. Add visual height to the ceiling by painting it white, or expand the appearance of the whole area by painting the walls in similar light cool shades. To make the bedroom appear roomier, it is crucial that you select the right color.

Does the ceiling in the bedroom extend up taller than you want it to? Choose deep blue or another deep color to bring the ceiling visually downward. The darker color will also cover up any defects while making the bedroom feel warmer than ever.

Select a Color in Existing Decor

If you are still confused about what color to select when decorating a bedroom, then go with a shade that matches your existing decor. In general, bedrooms are acessorized according to wall color; using what you have is a good idea unless you have plans to change everything from ceiling to floor. Choose an appropriate hue and your bedroom will have a completely new look without spending a small fortune.

Tip from Designers

To ensure wall coverings or paint are the right choice, invest in a small sample or a single roll of wallpaper rather than enough to complete the entire bedroom. You can cover a poster board and view the large sample in different positions and at various times during the day as natural lighting changes. This will provide a better idea of how the bedroom will look when complete, and you will more than likely end up with a hue that suits your style as well as the mood you want to convey when decorating.

Surf Decor – For The Hippest Child In The Neighborhood

August 1st, 2010

Kids’ rooms are all about themes today, everything from a superhero to the latest popular cartoon character. But you don’t have to stop there, think about your son or daughter’s favorite hobby or sport and make that work for you when decorating their room. If you have a child that loves surfing or is a little beach bunny, surf decorations can make for a very cool theme for them.

When you think of the beach you think of surfing, so what is more natural than a few real surfboards to use in the transformation? Surf shops and flea markets usually have some used ones lying around at a cheap cost to you. Turn one into a wall shelf with a few brackets installed in the wall. Take another and turn it into a tabletop for a desk. If you have a surfer kid, this is a perfect opportunity to hang their own on the wall off season.

Think about the walls of the room, if you are good with a paint brush you can create a wave crashing effect. Paint the walls a nice blue and then using a brush and white paint, take big sweeping strokes to create a wave effect, they could even overlap onto the ceiling. If you are not handy with a brush, rag painting is something that can create a similar affect. Offset the wells with light airy white curtains with straight lines, nothing frilly or too fancy.

If you have some beach towels lying around, they are not only the perfect touch but can add the right amount of color. Hang these on the walls or even use one to reupholster a small chair or desk chair in your kid’s room.

Posters are a great addition, especially if they have a favorite surfer that they look up to or even ones of crashing waves or beaches. But what can really stand out are some beach signs, new and old. You can find replica vintage beach signs at many online shops today or at a local surf shop to really add some character to your surf decorations.

Add a bit of fun with novelty items. You can find a variety of different surf and beach related items that would match the room perfectly. A surfboard print light switch plate, a surfboard shaped wall clock and a few surfboard wall hooks for their coats and hats are just a few of the very cool things out there to choose from.

Bedding today is all about themes and pulls a room together nicely. You’ll find there will be a large selection for you to choose from in many different colorful or even subtle designs. Let your son or daughter pick out their favorite here, whether it is surfboards, a beach scene or even their favorite surfer.

Kids love summer and summer vacation, and when you think of summer you think of the beach house decorating. Even if your kid isn’t a surfer you can still transform their ordinary room into something spectacular with the right pieces of surfboard decor that will make them feel like they are at the beach every day.

How To Go About Furnishing Your Home

June 24th, 2010

The excitement of moving to a new house is unparalleled, but with it comes the chore of furnishing and decorating your new abode. It matters little if you have purchased your dream home or if you are simply renting an apartment, but the fact remains that you will want to create a comfortable living space that works for you. Luckily there are many stores that now sell a wide variety of household goods.

The kitchen is the heart of any home and is one of the more important areas in the home. This is where you will cook all your meals and be sure to have an extra roasting pan or two in the cupboard for those lazy Sunday lunches. Other must have items include crockery, cutlery and a range of serving bowls or dishes.

Making your sleeping quarters comfortable is one of your first priorities and shopping for bedding quilts will open your eyes to the sheer variety of selections available. An astounding combination of colors, patterns and fabrics are available for you to choose from. Shop for accessories like pedestals, pillows and linens to suit your tastes.

Most families start the day with a morning cup of coffee, so be sure to invest in a 4 cup coffee maker so that you can all sit around the breakfast table with a fresh hot cup of brewed coffee. Your more expensive appliances will be the stove, refrigerator and washing machine, but these are standard items for any kitchen.

A home should reflect your personal tastes and it is your prerogative to decorate it and furnish it as you wish. Whether your tastes range from country cottage to modern contemporary, always keep a supply of environmentally friendly cleaning products around the house to ensure that your living areas are clean and well maintained.

Spend that little extra on environmentally friendly household cleaners and throw out old or broken items that are cluttering up your space. Think before buying, because as lovely as some decorative items may be someone is going to need to clean them, probably you and they do tend to make a simple space look crowded.

While you are in the store contemplating the purchase of another item, regardless of whether it is an appliance or a stylish piece of furniture, imagine how it will fit into your home. Have you got a space all picked out for it? Will it match your decor and color scheme? Will it suit the other furniture in the room? Visualize before you buy.

It is in the kitchen where we prepare meals for our family, and where we sit with friends for a cup of coffee and good conversation. It is no wonder that many homeowners really spend time to make certain that it is designed and decorated appropriately and beautifully.

The following tips are ideal for the homeowner who has just purchased a house or recently finished a kitchen renovation and has no idea how to decorate.

Attempt to achieve a harmonious balance between form and function.

Form refers to the attributes of beauty, to what is aesthetically appealing. Function, on the other hand, refers to the usefulness or practicality of a certain thing or arrangement. It is essential that you try to realize a balance between the two when beautifying your kitchen. Remember when placing kitchen furniture that you want the outcome to be that the kitchen is not only pleasing to look at but also practical and functional when preparing a family feast.

For instance, it makes sense to install cabinets close by the sink so that after washing plates, pots and utensils, you can effortlessly put them away within arm’s reach. You would not need to travel across the room. Just make sure that the way you arrange the cabinet near the sink would still look beautiful and not awkward or cluttered.

Hang wonderful wall art designs.

From wall hanging and nautical wall designs to leaf metal wall art, abstract wall art, and sports wall decor, there exists a diverse assortment of wall decor art that you can pick from. However, this does not mean that you have free reign to put just anything on the wall.
What you should hang in your kitchen should be related to food or should be neutral so as not to give the wrong impression or idea about your kitchen. As an example, the leaf metal wall art may seem okay for a kitchen since this can be related to vegetables and gardening but a sports wall decor would appear totally out of place in this location.

Go beyond just painting the kitchen.

Yes, it is important to opt for an appetizing color for the kitchen. But apart from that, you can lend a livelier feel to your kitchen by adding stenciled designs in the corners or edges of the wall or kitchen cabinets. Make sure the pattern you choose is related to food or food items.

Pick out a rugged and beautiful kitchen countertop.

Kitchen counter tops come in a wide variety – granite, marble, stone, wood, and many others. You will find that there are a diversity of different colors and styles to select from. It is imperative to choose one that is complements the theme and design of your kitchen. For example, if you have a country style kitchen, it would be great to have a wooden kitchen counter top.

Bright textiles make an eye-catching difference.

Pick out nice and bright curtains, table covers, table napkins, hand towels and kitchen equipment covers to add flair to your kitchen space.

The right kind of decor for the kitchen can genuinely inspire you or anyone enters within to cook fabulous dishes and meals.

The kitchen should be decorated in such a way that it will inspire you to cook and whip up hearty and exciting meals for the whole family.

Making The Most Of A Small Living Space

May 9th, 2010
Comments Off

Small spaces, such as dorm rooms or studio apartments, can seem cramped and cluttered if they are not organized properly. But with the right attention to detail and maximizing of space, they can be perfectly comfortable living spaces for a single person. Here are a few things to begin thinking about, that can help you make the most of your space.

Cooking Options

Depending on the set-up of your space, you may share a kitchen area with others, you may have a small one of your own, or you may not have one at all. Very few dorm rooms have stoves, and the same is true for some studio apartments as well. You may have a small refrigerator, but your cooking options may be limited. For this reason, there are certain appliances, such as a microwave, a hot plate, or a stainless steel rice cooker, that can be very useful when moving into this type of environment.

Furniture

Furnishing is a key element of maximizing space. If your furniture is the wrong size, or even the wrong shape, it will make the space feel cramped and crowded. But with the right furnishings, you might find that it looks even bigger than it did when it was empty. A loft bed, which is a bed that sits high above the ground and is accessed using a ladder, can be very helpful in small spaces.

When you move into a dorm room, furniture is generally provided. A large number of dorm rooms will contain a loft bed with desk underneath. This provides the student with sleeping space and a study area all in one. Since the bed is above the ground, the rest of the floor space is available for use, and there will probably be enough room, even with the desk, for a small couch, love seat, or reclining chair.

Studio apartments are usually not furnished. A rented room may or may not be furnished, depending on the arrangement. If you are moving into an empty space, a lofted bed is definitely an option to consider. You also might want to think about getting a futon. Futons sit on the ground, so they do take up more space than loft beds, but they can be turned into couches during the day. With a futon, you have a place to sleep and a place for company to sit all in one. Folding chairs can be helpful too, since they can be stored when you do not need them.

These are just a few tips for maximizing your small space. You can find all sort of other tips and tricks as well. Your small room does not have to feel like a cell; it can be a great place to live.
