Bedroom Color Choices

August 15th, 2010
Comments Off

Your bedroom is your escape from the world, and no matter whether you choose to spend your time there lounging and reading or watching television, it should exude your taste and style. Deciding how to choose the right color for a bedroom can be somewhat confusing, and looking at small paint or wallpaper samples in stores is not always the answer. Before choosing colors for your bedroom, take into consideration the following tips. Selecting the right colors for your room is necessary in order to design a sanctuary of relaxation.

Conveying a Mood

Before you choose a color for a bedroom, do not be tempted to go with something just because it is pleasing to the eye. You may end up regretting the color choice later on down the road. The vibe that you want to exude in in your bedroom should be considered before investing money and time. Due to the fact that color has the ability to alter the mood, selecting the correct color for the bedroom is vital to the design process.

Cool colors such as blue, lavender, and green set a relaxing tone, and they are an excellent choice for a bedroom. Choose a light shade for a calming effect~[Select lighter shade for a relaxing effect~For a calming effect, select a lighter shade~lighter hues may have a calming effect~To create an effect that is calming, choose colors that are light~You can achieve a relaxing aura if you choose light colors}.

Energizing and warm, red is an excellent selection of color for your bedroom. To create a haven for romance, choose rich red walls.

Do you want to wake up feeling rejuvenated and ready to begin the day? Choose a lemony shade of yellow. Selecting a lighter shade of yellow will have the effect of making the bedroom feel naturally bright and airy.

Changing the Look of Visual Space

Keep in mind that the colors that you select not only affect the vibe of the room, but also the manner in which the eye perceives space. Is the bedroom less spacious than desired? It is a good idea to choose wallpaper or paint in a light cool color. Add visual height to the ceiling by painting it white, or expand the appearance of the whole area by painting the walls in similar light cool shades. To make the bedroom appear roomier, it is crucial that you select the right color.

Does the ceiling in the bedroom extend up taller than you want it to? Choose deep blue or another deep color to bring the ceiling visually downward. The darker color will also cover up any defects while making the bedroom feel warmer than ever.

Select a Color in Existing Decor

If you are still confused about what color to select when decorating a bedroom, then go with a shade that matches your existing decor. In general, bedrooms are acessorized according to wall color; using what you have is a good idea unless you have plans to change everything from ceiling to floor. Choose an appropriate hue and your bedroom will have a completely new look without spending a small fortune.

Tip from Designers

To ensure wall coverings or paint are the right choice, invest in a small sample or a single roll of wallpaper rather than enough to complete the entire bedroom. You can cover a poster board and view the large sample in different positions and at various times during the day as natural lighting changes. This will provide a better idea of how the bedroom will look when complete, and you will more than likely end up with a hue that suits your style as well as the mood you want to convey when decorating.

Bring A Tropical Blast Of Fun And Relaxation To Your Bedroom With Hawaiin Decor

August 8th, 2010
Comments Off

Looking for an interesting theme for your bedroom? Why not delve into the exotic world of tropical themes and use Hawaiin decor to create your own personal sanctuary.

If you are a more conservative decorator, or have never decorated in a theme before, a Hawaiian or island theme may seem a little excessive for your bedroom. You can make the bedroom as extravagant or basic as you like because there are so many elements in Hawaiian decor.

The following are some ideas for you to think about when putting together such a theme for your bedroom.

Walls. You can add color to your walls in various ways. If you would like to keep it simple, a clean neutral shade of brown such as sand or a light taupe, or a warm white are excellent paint choices. Look at painting the wall a brilliant but soft green, blue, or yellow for a more dramatic wall. Enhance the look even more by adding copper art sculpture. On the other hand, if you are feeling creative, you could paint a beach wall mural, or purchase a ready made mural, such as a Hawaiian sunset, and paste it on the wall. If you like prints, you can always opt for palm tree, palm leaf, or floral wallpaper.

Floors. The ideal complement for any Hawaiian decor is flooring in shades of deep red-brown, chestnut, or sand. If you do not have the budget for hardwood floors, you can go for laminate flooring instead, which is cheaper. Optimal choices for carpet in the room includes tones of brown, ocean blue, and sea green.

Doors and Moldings. In order to blend nicely with the rest of the room, these elements must be in hues of dark and rich brown like oak or cherry.

Window treatments. The best choice in treatments for your windows for Hawaiian decor are wooden shutters or bamboo blinds. You might choose to add some character to the window treatments by installing a sheer white curtain, or you might leave them as is.

Lighting. A wood ceiling fan, especially one with blades in the shape of palm leaves, is ideal for the Hawaiian theme. If a ceiling fan is out of the question, opt for any other basic ceiling light, as your goal is to not make the ceiling light a focal point of the room. For night stands, whimsical lamps featuring hula dancers, palm trees, or pineapples are perfect.

Bedding. You essentially have two options when it comes to bedding. Choose a solid color for your quilt or comforter or go for a print. If a solid color is chosen, then you can dress up your bed by bringing in some printed toss pillows. If you do choose a print such as orchids or palm leaves be sure to choose throw pillows in solid colors. It is imperative that the room does not carry too many prints or it will seem too busy and intimidating.

Furniture. Wood furniture is definitely the way to go. In lieu of the expense of solid wood furniture, choose dark faux wood furniture or bamboo. That being said, don’t overload your space with furniture, as your goal is to create an open space. Be certain that you include all necessary furniture pieces first (I.E. bed, dresser, chest of drawers and bedside table). If you still have room than you can add any other furniture such as end tables, sitting chair, shelves, armoire, etc.

Accessories – Other Hawaiian decor you may wish to add to the room include:
• Palm plant (real or artificial).
• Vase of artificial orchids.
metal wall art decor and sculptures or contemporary wall hangings of palm trees, orchids or palm leaves.
• Authentic Hawaiian art.
• Pictures of palm trees, orchids, a beach, Hawaiian architecture, hula girl, or actual framed photographs taken in Hawaii, etc. Note: wooden frames are best for pictures or wall art.
• Area rug with flower or palm leaf.
• Plain or decorative bamboo or wooden screen.
• Throw pillows with floral or palm leaf pattern.
• Bamboo chair.

When it comes to using Hawaiian decor for your bedroom, there are plenty of options to choose from. Your decisions will be based on your budget and your own personal taste. Therefore, make sure you shop around and look for different items before making any final decisions. And finally, trust your own judgment and do not be afraid when putting together your bedroom. Take your time, and have fun!

Surf Decor – For The Hippest Child In The Neighborhood

August 1st, 2010
Comments Off

Kids’ rooms are all about themes today, everything from a superhero to the latest popular cartoon character. But you don’t have to stop there, think about your son or daughter’s favorite hobby or sport and make that work for you when decorating their room. If you have a child that loves surfing or is a little beach bunny, surf decorations can make for a very cool theme for them.

When you think of the beach you think of surfing, so what is more natural than a few real surfboards to use in the transformation? Surf shops and flea markets usually have some used ones lying around at a cheap cost to you. Turn one into a wall shelf with a few brackets installed in the wall. Take another and turn it into a tabletop for a desk. If you have a surfer kid, this is a perfect opportunity to hang their own on the wall off season.

Think about the walls of the room, if you are good with a paint brush you can create a wave crashing effect. Paint the walls a nice blue and then using a brush and white paint, take big sweeping strokes to create a wave effect, they could even overlap onto the ceiling. If you are not handy with a brush, rag painting is something that can create a similar affect. Offset the wells with light airy white curtains with straight lines, nothing frilly or too fancy.

If you have some beach towels lying around, they are not only the perfect touch but can add the right amount of color. Hang these on the walls or even use one to reupholster a small chair or desk chair in your kid’s room.

Posters are a great addition, especially if they have a favorite surfer that they look up to or even ones of crashing waves or beaches. But what can really stand out are some beach signs, new and old. You can find replica vintage beach signs at many online shops today or at a local surf shop to really add some character to your surf decorations.

Add a bit of fun with novelty items. You can find a variety of different surf and beach related items that would match the room perfectly. A surfboard print light switch plate, a surfboard shaped wall clock and a few surfboard wall hooks for their coats and hats are just a few of the very cool things out there to choose from.

Bedding today is all about themes and pulls a room together nicely. You’ll find there will be a large selection for you to choose from in many different colorful or even subtle designs. Let your son or daughter pick out their favorite here, whether it is surfboards, a beach scene or even their favorite surfer.

Kids love summer and summer vacation, and when you think of summer you think of the beach house decorating. Even if your kid isn’t a surfer you can still transform their ordinary room into something spectacular with the right pieces of surfboard decor that will make them feel like they are at the beach every day.

Baby Nursery Design Tips

July 28th, 2010
Comments Off

The vast amount of baby’s room decor can be very overwhelming, especially for new parents. There are many different decorations, furniture items, bedding, wall art, etc. for you to think about. Therefore to assist you in narrowing down your decisions, it is a wise suggestion to focus on a theme. Keep in mind, a theme doesn’t need to be based on a cartoon, teddy bears, clowns, or animals; it can be based on something as simple as a color or be entirely eclectic.

Even though a theme isn’t necessary for your baby’s nursery, it can be helpful when it comes to focusing and organizing your decorating ideas. Keeping that in mind, the following is a step-by-step technique of how you can focus your baby nursery decorating plan by utilizing a motif.

Step 1 – Select a theme. Choosing a motif is about focusing on a single element and utilizing this element throughout all of the pieces you use to decorate the baby’s room. Examples of a theme include, but are certainly not limited to:

• Classic cartoon – I.E. “Strawberry Shortcake”, “Minnie Mouse”, “Bob the Builder”, etc.
• Magical creatures – I.E. fairies, dragons, elves, etc. – any characters that can be found in fairytales and nursery rhymes.
• Animals and Bugs – I.E. farm animals, marine animals, birds, lady bugs, bumblebees, caterpillars, butterflies, etc.
• Teddy bears
• Clowns
• Balloons
• Flowers
• Sports
• Geometrical shapes
• Color
• Etc.

The list of themes can go on and on. Thus, it is a great notion to select something you love and want your child to respond to. Determine how many different decor items are available to complement your theme by browsing both brick and mortar and online stores.

Step 2 – Focus on your theme. After you have picked out a motif for your baby’s nursery, you can then devote your energy to shaping the motif. For example, if lady bugs are the selected motif, think of the many methods that you can implement lady bugs into the nursery. This doesn’t just mean taking the actual bug into consideration, but also its different characteristics such as its color. If you wish to focus only on red lady bugs with black spots, then black spots and the color red should be a central part of the motif. Or, if you want an undersea theme, paint an underwater ocean mural on the wall and use tropical fish metal wall art for three-dimensional  appeal.

Step 3 – Furnish your theme. Once you have picked out a theme, you must then turn your attention to furniture and furniture positioning. You need to decide what furniture is needed, and then set it up in the room to achieve the best and most convenient and unobstructed layout. Start with the essential pieces (I.E. crib, dresser, and changing table), and if you still have enough space, you can then add more furnishings such as a rocking chair,an end table, etc.

Since most of the baby nursery decor accessories will be the focal point of your theme, it’s a good idea to keep furniture looking simple. Coordinating wood or white colored furniture goes with almost every theme.

Step 4 – Color your theme. Once you know where the furniture will go, the next step is your walls. You may select wall paper in your theme, or you can paint your walls. When painting your walls, regardless of your theme, it’s a good idea to choose a light color to create an open and gentle feeling. Warm tones of blue, white, light yellow, green, or pink are great color choices. Paint the wall a solid color and then add a thematic wallpaper boarder at the top or middle of the room. If you do not want to have a border, consider painting a few characters from your motif on the wall with the help of a stencil, paint your own design free hand, or put up a wall mural. Just make certain that all designs, artwork, or murals are positioned on the wall in a manner that will not be hindered from view by furnishings.

Step 5 – Finish your theme. When the walls are taken care of, and the furniture has been moved in, finish off your theme with accessories. This includes candle sconces and holders, stuffed toys, lamps, music box, baby mobile, area rug, nightlight, bedding, quilt, window treatments, etc. Employing a farm animal theme as an example, you can obtain a musical mobile that features numerous animals, a pig lamp, a bumper with chickens, a lamb throw rug, a cat nightlight, sheep bedding, piggy bank, wall art of a barn and farm animals.

No matter the theme you decide for your baby nursery decor, make sure you don’t leave your decorating for the last minute. You do not want to be decorating the nursery in the final months of your pregnancy.

Tips On Beach Home Decor For Your Home

July 20th, 2010
Comments Off

Whether the coast of Maine, South Carolina, Texas, California, or Washington is the inspiration, adding beach house decorating to the home can be done without the expense of hiring a professional decorator. Each of these coasts are characterized by a variety of features, so take some time to research the desired area, then select furniture and decorations to correspond.

The color schemes found in most coastal areas are white, blue, green, and brown. All are present in varying degrees in shorelines throughout the country. They can be separated or combined throughout the home according to the decorator’s preferences.

Using light colors on the walls of rooms will lend the home an airy look. Some prefer stark white walls throughout, but that is not necessary. While a neutral color, white can lend an institutional look to the home, so that should be kept in mind when envision your beach decorating style. Whatever color is chosen, it can always be painted over if it doesn’t come out as desired. However, making the right color choice from the start is recommended.

When selecting pieces of furniture for each of the rooms, decorators should not be afraid to use their creativity. Some prefer the “shabby chic” look of mismatched furniture, while others like the consistency of matching pieces. The main idea is to match sure that the colors in the furniture don’t strongly clash with each other or the walls and floors. The eye should not be drawn to a specific item in the room as an “eyesore” whenever viewing a room. If the room will be utilized often, it is important to fill it with comfortable furniture.

Furniture coverings and fabrics all tend to be striped in one form or another with this style. The size and colors of the stripes can be varying but some solid colors should be used to offset them. This will keep the room from looking to busy and help to tone it down.

If window coverings are desired, they should be kept simple and use muted colors. Blinds fashioned from bamboo, rattan, or light-colored wood are a nice choice. If fabric blinds are desired, they should be either white or another light neutral color. Area rugs made from fabric or bamboo may be spaced throughout the room. Many area rugs may be hand or machine-washed for easy maintenance.

Because of the coastal theme, plants should be very prominent. Using palm trees and orchids will bring a special flair to the room that will truly give someone the feeling that they have been magically transported to another place.

As far as room accents go, select those that correspond with the room’s tropical decorating theme. Small row boats, ship’s wheels, and ship lights are appropriate for nautical-themed rooms. Coastal decorating ideas may be accented by shells, sand dollars, or coral. The possibilities are endless and vary with the decorator’s style, but all will yield an end result that is pleasing to the eye and creates a relaxed atmosphere in any home.
