Get The Accessories Right and The Rest Will Follow

November 8th, 2009

Ask any decent interior designer and they will tell you that it is all in the detail. The meaning behind this is that even if you have great light and space in your home, and maybe have some grand pieces of furniture to go in it, you won’t ever be able to achieve a great style if you don’t have the correct accessories and don’t make sure the finish is to a high standard.Lets take a look at three easy ways to ensure your accessories don’t let your design down.

Keep With One Colour
. If you havent got an eye for matching colours, just stick to one for all your items. You don’t need to have all your items exactly the same colour tone, but it’s best to try and stick to a close range. For example, you might have a blue lampshade, with a light blue skirting board and a slightly different shade of blue table cloth. Using this technique means that you don’t risk clashing colours and if you buy more accessories, you don’t have to worry about them not fitting in to your color scheme when you get them home.

Buy Quality. If you scrimp and save on your accessories, the end result will be a finish that looks cheap. This does not been to say that all your accessories need to be expensive, but the items that stand out and that people interact with benefit from a bit of quality. Tableware for example is a key item to get right, as they are not only often closely inspected, but people actually use the items in everyday life.

Feature and Functional Pieces. As already touched upon, the functional or feature items in your home are the hardest to get right. However, they also have the biggest impact on the design and feel of a room.Select items that match your persona and style. If your not into sports, then please don’t have rowing oars mounted on your walls, or display medals that you got in a charity shop. However if you are a big whisky or wine drinker, having the right glassware on show looks good. You might have ISO wine glasses on show or some decanters, it really doesn’t matter as long as it represents you well.
